The U-Mix Centre is currently bedecked with exhibitions celebrating Black History Month. Everyone is welcome to come and look round during opening hours, or contact us for more information. They will be on display until Wednesday 8th November.

To honour the official BHM 2023 theme of ‘Saluting Our Sisters’, in our reception area is a banner stand recognising some of Sheffield’s female BME football pioneers. This was researched and written by FURD for Sheffield Council as part of Sheffield’s arts and heritage activity around the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022. It also forms part of FURD’s Stoppage Time project. The banner along with more information can also be viewed at the link below.

Turn right along the corridor towards our gym, dance studio and recording studio to view 1001 Muslim Inventions. This exhibition celebrates how Arabic civilisations have contributed to many areas of modern life, including medicine, architecture and agriculture, particularly between the 7th and 17th centuries. This exhibition was produced by the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation and is particularly suitable for 11-16 year olds. More information can be found at the link below.

Turn left along the corridor to see another FURD-produced exhibition, One Among Us. This features the personal stories of some of our volunteers about their journeys to Sheffield from around the world – most of them as asylum-seekers.

On the same corridor is ‘Power to the Sistas’, a black history exhibition put together by Sheffield Youth Service, featuring the stories of some pioneering black women from around the world.
