FURD-supported team Sharrow United won a place in the Meadowhall Sunday League Cup Final with a 3-2 win over Crosspool. Their Premier League opponents, strongly fancied to win the title, went into half-time with a 2-0 lead after the advantage of playing downhill in the first half on the sloping pitch at Hallam FC, the world's second oldest football ground.
Mukid Khan pulled a goal back from a Manny Heywood corner, and with time running out Keith Ward equalised with a near post header from another Heywood corner. The match went into extra time, when a stunning free kick from Ward gave Sharrow the lead which they clung onto with some desperate but courageous defending. Sharrow's glittering prize is a Cup Final at Bramall lane on Thursday 8th May. Watch this space for details of how to buy tickets for what should be a memorable night.
Meanwhile the African Dream Team joined the party when they clinched the Meadowhall Division Three title with a 4-2 win at Arbourthorne Hotel. ADT, under the stewardship of Ishaaq Heywood and Larry Babs Mohammed, now bid to make it a FURD double cup success when they face tough opponents High Noon in the Tinsley Charity Cup on Thursday 10th April at Caribbean Sports Club, Ecclesfield, kick-off 6.15.
