New activity group for refugees and asylum-seekers at the U-Mix Centre

22 Jan 2013 / News

A new regular activity group for refugees and asylum seekers is now up and running at FURD's Umix centre. So far over 30 individuals have played  football and new people arrive every week. It takes place every Wednesday 11-1pm at the Umix centre. FURD provide boots where possible, changing rooms, showers including towels and toiletries, warm clothing, all weather pitches, a pool table and table tennis. Come and meet people, relax and have fun. Just turn up or contact Tracy on 0114 2587787 or 07583 295610.

Although this group welcomes all refugees and asylum-seekers, another session just for women is due to start soon - more details to follow soon.

This work forms part of FURD's Big Lottery funded research project, 'Football: A Shared Sense of Belonging?' and part of its aim is to help participants to integrate into their new community. Several members of the group took part in FURD's reception in the Lord Mayor's parlour on 17th January, where they learnt about the role of the Lord Mayor and about how local government works.
