FURD's female football has the feel-good factor!

18 Nov 2013 / News

FURD is running a weekly football session for women and girls at the U-Mix Centre, every Tuesday from 6-7pm.

The sessions are friendly, fun and currently free! They are open to all females aged 9 and over, but are particularly aimed at women and girls not already playing in organised football due to age, lack of experience, opportunity, time or any other factor. The current age range is from 9 to 50-something.

We are now offering coaching from a Level 1 qualified female coach as well as the opportunity just to have a game, without the pressure that can come with competitive football.

The initiative was started in April 2013 by FURD`s Ruth Johnson with support from the rest of the FURD team. Ruth said,

`We started these sessions in response to requests for some non-competitive football opportunities for older women, but they are also timed to be part of the girls-only youth club slot at the U-Mix Centre. The youth club is run by FURD in partnership with Roshni Asian Women`s Resource Centre, and this link has helped us to attract several Asian and Somali young women to the football sessions.

`We have a really diverse group of women and girls attending, including beginners and some very talented players. It`s been great to see everyone mucking in together, having fun, improving skills and fitness, and forging new friendships. It`s what FURD is all about!`

We are now working with Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA to further develop football opportunities for women and girls. If you have any requests or suggestions, please contact Ruth Johnson or Mehrun Ahmed at FURD.
