FURD
Three teams representing FURD were among over 4,000 teams that entered the 2017 FA People's Cup, a free national 5-a-side tournament organised by the FA and the BBC, with 16 different categories. The first round was held over the weekend of 24th-26th February with heats taking place around the country.
FURD had teams in the adult female, female veteran and under-14 girls categories. Whilst none of them progressed to the next stage, everyone enjoyed and learnt from the experience, which was a new one for many participants. The teams were put together from participants at FURD's coaching sessions whilst many of their opponents were representing local league teams.
Our female veterans side got to the national final last year when there were only 6 entries in the category and featured in a BBC film about the tournament. This year there were about 20 teams including 3 from Sheffield, with Armley progressing from the Sheffield heat.
Our under-14 team was playing together for the first time, with support from our funders Children in Need. They had a baptism of fire with Doncaster Belles under-14s being among their opponents! The Belles won the group, but FURD played some great football, winning one of their games 5-2, cheered on by several members of our veterans squad. We are always keen to welcome new players of any age or ability to our sessions at the U-Mix Centre, which are:
Saturdays 11-12 for 8-15 year old girls.
Tuesdays 6-7pm for women and girls aged 11 and upwards, including adults. We currently have players up to the age of 65.
