Former England defender Earl Barrett is extending an invitation to a consultation event in Sheffield to anyone interested in finding employment in the football industry. The session takes place at Sheffield United's Academy on Firshill Crescent, Sheffield, S4 7DR (tel. 0114 2619886) on Wednesday 9th February from 6pm-9pm.
The event is part of a mentor and leadership project called 'Leading the Game' which has been set up by Kick it Out and the Equality and Human Rights Commission with the aim of increasing representation in the football industry.
The evening will offer advice with the aim of helping people involved in local grassroots clubs and community organisations to get employment in football. Members of the panel, including FURD director Howard Holmes and officials from Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association, will also be giving advice on funding for grassroots clubs, volunteering opportunities and how to run a range of football-related activities.
Earl Barrett, who played for both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, said,
“Some people are under the impression that the only opportunities in football come on the playing side of things. We are here to make people aware that it is a lot broader than that. The game is littered with positions at different clubs, governing bodies and coaching firms. Whether it be as a press officer, a commercial manager, a coach or just working in a ticket office somewhere, there is a place for you.”
The consultation evening - free, open to all and with refreshments provided – adopts a ‘Question Time’ style format with Earl and other panelists addressing questions from the floor. Running from 6-9pm, there will also be presentations taking place.
