Conference on Islamophobia

Football Unites teamed up with colleagues from Sheffield Futures (Sheffield’s careers guidance and youth service) on 2nd November to host a mini-conference about Islam and Islamophobia at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground.

The event, called ‘Creating Space: Exploring Truths and Fallacies About Muslims’ was designed mainly for non-Muslim professionals and attracted a full house including teachers, youth workers, police, probation workers and social services staff. Workshops looked at Images and Perceptions of Muslims, What Is Islam, Islam and the Media and Islam and Sport.

The event is being seen as a first step in an ongoing process of work that needs to continue to increase understanding and equip workers with the tools they need to challenge Islamophobia and racism.

Islam Awareness Week runs from 20th-26th November 2006.
