We have added an article about Charlie Williams to the 'Pioneering Black Footballers' section of this website.
Williams played for Doncaster Rovers from 1948 to 1959 and later found greater fame as a comedian.
He was born near Barnsley, and worked as a coal miner at Upton Colliery before and during his football career. Upton is just a few miles from where the first black professional footballer, Arthur Wharton, also worked as a miner, probably at Frickley Colliery, after retiring from professional football and before moving to Yorkshire Main Colliery.
