The 'One Game, One Community' annual anti-racist weeks of action in football run from 16th-28th October, part of a Europe-wide campaign co-ordinated by FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe). October is also Black History Month. Football Unites is busy organising a number of events to mark the occasions.
On Thursday 16th October we're running a 5-a-side 'One Game, One Community' football tournament for local primary schools at the Sheffield United Academy. Children will have the chance to take home anti-racist football posters, stickers and magazines and tickets for Sheffield United's next home match. The prize for the winners will be to take to the pitch before United's match against Preston on 25th October to carry anti-racist banners around the pitch.
On Saturday 25th October Football Unites volunteers will be distributing anti-racist posters and stickers to spectators before the Sheffield United v Preston match in support of the club's activities to mark the action day.
The 'Arthur Wharton' and 'Pioneers, Past Masters and Future Challenges' exhibitions will be on display at our base at The Stables in Sheffield from Tuesday 28th-Friday 31st October and everyone is welcome to come and view them. Call us in advance if you'd like to book a group in to see them. The exhibitions are also on tour this month to schools, youth services, police and government departments from Sheffield to Kent.
Football Unites is researching an exhibition about the history of the black experience in football in Sheffield for an event to be held next year (see previous news story).
The date for the launch of our Youth Against Conflict group's 'It's Your Call' DVD and education pack has been set for Wednesday 19th November - more details to follow.
Our workers are also busy running workshops and delivering talks and lessons to a range of audiences from primary school children to Home Office UK Border Agency staff.
If we can help you with your Black History Month or One Game, One Community events, it's not too late to get in touch!
