The autobiography, first published in 1857, of Mary Seacole, a Jamaican nurse whose fame rivalled that of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. Her offer to volunteer as a nurse in the war was met with refusal and racism, but she went anyway, acting as doctor and 'mother' to wounded soldiers.
