The memoir of Szpilman, a pianist in Warsaw, who incredibly survived the occupation of Warsaw by the Nazis in the war, during which he lost all his family and most of his friends. He was eventually saved by a German officer who heard him playing a piano found among the rubble. The book also includes extracts from the German officer's diary.
