Paper that appeared in the Scottish Journal of Political Economy, volume 47, no 4, Sptember 2000. An earlier paper by Szymanski found that teams with above average numbers of black players tend to have lower wage bills than comparable teams with fewer black players, and suggested this could be a consequence of prejudice from either fans or club owners. This paper examines whether the discrimination has its roots in fan prejudice, but found little evidence to support the hypothesis.
