At FURD, Ruth has been at the heart of uncovering and celebrating the hidden stories of women’s football in Sheffield — stories that for too long went unheard. Through the Stoppage Time project - see link below - alongside volunteers, Sheffield City Council and The Football Association, she has helped bring to life the legacy of women who played the game in the most challenging of times.
During the First World War, women working in munitions factories didn’t just contribute to the war effort — they built football teams, communities, and a movement. Their courage and passion became the foundation of a story that deserved to be told.
And Ruth made sure it was.
But she didn’t stop there.
On March 21st 2026, Ruth delivered a powerful talk at the Crucible Theatre on the history of women’s football in Sheffield — connecting past to present, and inspiring future generations. Members of our women’s football team also contributed their voices, ensuring that this story continues to grow.
This is more than history.
This is recognition.
This is legacy.
And it’s people like Ruth who make sure these stories are never forgotten.
We now invite you to be part of this journey.
If you are a descendant of women who played football in Sheffield — in munitions factories or beyond — we would love to hear your story. Please contact Ruth at ruth@furd.org.
Because every story matters.
And together, they shape our future.
