Football: A Shared Sense of Belonging? interim conference

FURD is mid-way through a 3 year Big Lottery funded research project entitled Football: A Shared Sense of Belonging? The project explores the possible role that football (and sport more widely) plays in helping to achieve a sense of mutual belonging amongst new arrivals and more settled communities.

To mark the journey so far, FURD is organising a conference to be held on Friday 9th September 2011 from 10am-4pm at The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield S1 4FW. The Football: A Shared Sense of Belonging?  interim conference aims to provide a space for individuals working in the field of sport, those working in the refugee support sector and other interested parties to engage in useful dialogue and share ideas.

The format of the day will involve presentations from guest speakers, including research participants from refugee backgrounds themselves, practitioners in the field and academics. This will involve an element of myth busting around reasons for migration, the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in particular and the role of sport in their lives. There will be an opportunity for informal networking amongst delegates and round-table discussions along the main strands that have so far emerged from the research project.

We want this event to be as open and inclusive as possible and welcome delegates who want to learn more about these issues or feel they have something to contribute to the debate.
